The Redlands Police Department Responsible Redlands initiative—a collaborative effort facilitated by the Redlands Police Department—focuses on curbing problems related to binge and underage drinking through ongoing strategic operations to enforce existing alcohol laws.

It is the responsibility of all of us to abide by laws aimed to ensure the health and safety of our community. A safer community means an improved business climate, a more attractive destination for visitors, less crime and violence, and improved safety, security, and well being for everyone.

Studies indicate a strong correlation between alcohol consumption and violent crimes. Binge and underage drinking is implicated in many significant problems including crimes, serious injuries, deaths due to alcohol-involved crashes, injuries due to alcohol-involved assaults, unwanted pregnancies, sexual assaults, scholastic problems, destruction of property, domestic violence, and a significant drain on public dollars and emergency services.

The Redlands Police Department Responsible Redlands Initiative provides a variety of coordinated enforcement actions including:

  • Party Patrols—Special officer teams, funded by a grant from San Bernardino County, to check for parties in violation of the City of Redlands Social Host Ordinance and other laws;
  • Saturation Patrols—Special patrols, funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, to identify and arrest those driving under the influence of alcohol;
  • DUI checkpoints—Operations set up at locations with high incidents of alcohol-related accidents and arrests, and funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, to check drivers for signs of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Shoulder tap operations—Minor decoys working with Police officers and officers from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which provides grant funding, to catch adults who are buying alcohol for minors;
  • Minor decoy operations— Minor decoys working with Police officers and officers from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which provides grant funding, to catch stores that sell alcohol to minors.

The Redlands Police Department Responsible Redlands Initiative aims to increase awareness of alcohol enforcement operations and the consequences for violators.

The Redlands Police Department Responsible Redlands Initiative enforcement operations target:

  • Hosts of parties at which individuals under 21 have access to alcohol;
  • Retail clerks who sell alcohol to those under 21;
  • Those over the age of 21 who provide alcohol to individuals under 21;
  • Bars, restaurants and staff who serve alcohol to those under 21 or others already over intoxicated;
  • Individuals under 21 who use false identifications to obtain alcohol;
  • Those driving while impaired by alcohol.

Other activities of the Redlands Police Department’s Responsible Redlands Initiative include dissemination of educational materials, outreach to residents, bars, restaurants, and alcohol retailers, as well as training and technical assistance for bars and restaurants to become more responsible servers of alcohol.
