Four arrested for DUI; additional traffic enforcement planned

Four people were arrested for driving under the influence during a weekend checkpoint and 22 drivers were cited for speeding during a traffic enforcement operation Monday. Redlands Police will conduct another grant-funded traffic enforcement operation on Friday evening targeting dangerous and aggressive motorcycle riders and driving under the influence.

Redlands Police arrested four people during a grant-funded sobriety checkpoint Friday evening for driving under the influence. Two drivers were cited for driving with a suspended license and one person was cited for having an open container of alcohol during the checkpoint in the eastbound lanes of Citrus Avenue at Church Street. A total of 119 vehicles passed through the checkpoint between 10 p.m. Friday, June 22, and 3 a.m. Saturday. 

On Monday, June 25, Redlands Police cited 22 drivers for speeding during a grant-funded traffic enforcement operation between 5:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. near Lugonia and Colton avenues and Lincoln and San Mateo streets.  In addition one driver was cited for running a stop sign and another was cited for failure to wear a seatbelt. Two other drivers were cited for driving on suspended licenses.

During the operation, a woman traveling more than 65 mph in a 35 mph zone slammed on her brakes and lost control of her vehicle, crashing into a tree. No one was injured. The vehicle was towed and the driver cited.

On Friday, June 29, three Redlands Police officers will be on a targeted grant-funded patrol from 4 to 11 p.m. looking especially for aggressive driving by motorcyclists, including speeding and crossing over the double yellow line, in addition to drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Funding for the Avoid DUI Campaign and targeted traffic enforcement operations is through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
