The Avoid the 25 DUI Task Force, which includes the Redlands Police Department, will be deploying special roving DUI patrols on Sunday, Feb. 3, in several communities throughout the area looking to stop and arrest drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. These DUI patrols are, in addition to regularly scheduled patrol officers, all looking for the tell-tale signs of an intoxicated driver behind the wheel.
One man is in custody and police are searching for a second suspect after a resident surprised two burglars in his home Wednesday morning.
Residents are warned to take precautions after a police helicopter spotted two bears near Wabash Avenue and Reservoir Road early Wednesday morning.
A Fontana Police helicopter was assisting Sheriff’s deputies in an unrelated call when they spotted the animals on a hillside about 100 yards east of Wabash Avenue.
Bears have occasionally been seen in wildlands around Redlands. There have been no reports of bear attacks in the area.

Redlands Firefighters battled an early-morning structure fire Wednesday that killed a resident’s pet dog.
Firefighters responded to the 2:25 a.m. call Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the 600 block of Forest Court after the sole resident returned home to find her house on fire.
It took 18 firefighters approximately 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
A display of historical photos, honoring the 125th anniversary of the City of Redlands, now hangs in the Redlands City Council Chambers.
The display includes archival photos of past anniversary celebrations, provided by the Heritage Room Archives at the A.K. Smiley Public Library. Former archivist Don McCue, recently named as the director of the Smiley Library, and current archivist Nathan Gonzales assisted in locating historic photos from the City’s 100th, 75th, 60th and 50th anniversary celebrations.
In addition, local photographer Stephen Wormser has created a collection of photos featuring past and current members of the Redlands City Council and Redlands Unified School District Board of Education, past presidents of the Redlands Chamber of Commerce and current members of the Redlands Police and Fire Departments. The Fire Department photo recreates a historic pose of department members and apparatus taken from overhead at the intersection of Cajon and Vine streets.
Another photo features the five current members of the City Council, who will serve during the anniversary year, culminating in November. Mayor Pro Tem Paul Foster chairs the 125th Anniversary Celebration Committee.
Join the Redlands Senior Centers as we take a trip to the Getty Villa in Malibu on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The fee will include admission and transportation to and from the museum. There you will be able to enjoy various displays available at the Getty Villa.
Participants may bring a sack lunch or buy lunch from the café at the Getty Villa.
The Redlands Police Department Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI/drivers license checkpoint beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, through 3 a.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Tennessee Street at Park Avenue.
Officers working grant-funded traffic patrols also issued nearly 60 citations and arrested one person for driving under the influence between Jan. 21 and Jan. 28.
Officers will contact drivers passing through Friday’s checkpoint looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check drivers for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
Zumba Gold exercise class will return the Redlands Senior Center beginning Feb. 5.
Designed for the older active adult, Zumba Gold is a low-impact, easy to follow, Latin-inspired dance fitness program that keeps you in the groove of life.
Classes are $20 per month or $5 per class. Classes are held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays beginning Feb. 5.

The A.K. Smiley Public Library will host a free employment workshop Thursday, Feb. 7.
Whether a person has been searching for a job for two weeks or two years, this workshop will provide imaginative ideas that will turn the job search process from reactive to proactive and put the job seeker in the driver’s seat for landing his or her dream career. Attendees will learn how not to be their own worst enemy and find a job based on their passion and interests using innovative search strategies. Attendees will also learn effective resume writing and interview techniques.
