Applications sought for commission, committee, board posts
Nov. 14, 2018 – The City of Redlands invites individuals to apply for positions on the Planning Commission, the Cultural Arts Commission, the Historic and Scenic Preservation Commission, the Airport Advisory Board, the Street Tree Committee and the A.K. Smiley Library Board of Trustees.
The Planning Commission prepares a comprehensive long term general plan for the physical development of the City and makes recommendations to the City Council relating to the maintenance of the General Plan, zoning administration, environmental assessments, site plan and architectural review, subdivision planning, sign, parking and landscaping regulations, housing and historic preservation. The Planning Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m.
The Cultural Arts Commission promotes public interest in arts, recommends new arts programs and sources of funding for those programs, assists the City Council by recommending policies to encourage, develop and support the arts in Redlands, and advises the City Council in the administration of the City’s “Art in Public Places” program. The Cultural Arts Commission meets bi-monthly on the second Monday of odd-numbered months at 4 p.m.
The Historic and Scenic Preservation Commission promotes public interest in and understanding of historical and scenic properties and their preservation. The Historic and Scenic Preservation Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.
The Airport Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to the administration, operation, development, improvement and maintenance of the Redlands Municipal Airport. The Airport Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.
The Street Tree Committee advises the City Council and recommends policies for the planting, care and removal of trees and shrubs in all parkways in the City. The Street Tree Committee meets bi-monthly on the fourth Thursday of even- numbered months at 5:30 p.m.
The Library Board of Trustees consists of five members, appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. The trustees hold office for three-year terms. One member of the board is selected as President of the board.
The State Education Code mandates that “the public library shall be managed by a board of library trustees.” The Library Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m.
The Board may make and enforce all rules, regulations and bylaws necessary for the administration, government and protection of the library and all property belonging thereto. The Board may administer trusts created for the Library and receive gifts by devise or bequests, hold property in trust in California or elsewhere, and dispose of property for the benefit of the Library. Since 1922, the Trustees have managed an Endowment Fund, income from which supplements and enriches the Library’s programs, acquisitions and well-being.
By City Council resolution in 1932 affirming Robert Watchorn’s Deed of Gift, the Library Trustees administer the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. In 2001, by City Council resolution, the Trustees also administer the Redlands Municipal Museum.
Deadline for filing applications for a position on any of these commissions, committees or boards is Nov. 29.
