Fire destroys abandoned building, damages power pole

Nov. 15, 2017 – Firefighters responded to a commercial structure fire at an abandoned building just north of Interstate 10 late Tuesday night.

Firefighters arrived in the 800 block of Lawton Street at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, to find an abandoned recycling building on the property fully involved in fire. The building had been occupied by transients moments earlier but no injuries were reported.

Crews knocked down the fire in about 30 minutes and remained on scene to overhaul and investigate until about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday. The building was destroyed and an Edison power pole damaged. Total damage is estimated at $20,000.

Investigators determined the fire was human caused. It is unknown whether it was intentional or accidental.
