Upcoming ZEMU train testing
Scheduled to begin on November 2, 2024, through January 31, 2025, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) will conduct testing for the ZEMU (Zero-Emission Multiple Unit) train on Metrolink’s Arrow corridor on the San Bernardino Line, between San Bernardino Downtown Station and the University of Redlands.
In observance of the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays, no testing will occur Nov. 25-29, Dec. 23-27, and Dec. 30-Jan. 3.
Phase 1: Grade Crossing Validation Testing
- What: The ZEMU train will move along the corridor between San Bernardino and Redlands to validate the communications technology between the train and the detection systems at the crossings.
- When: From 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. over the weekend of Nov. 2-3, with a possible second weekend, if needed, on Nov. 9-10.
- What to Expect: Railroad crossing bells and train horns will sound at each crossing throughout the weekend. Flaggers will be present at each intersection for safety.
Phase 2: Overnight Vehicle Testing
- What: Crews will be testing the performance of the ZEMU train.
- When: From 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on weeknights starting Nov. 11 through Jan. 31, 2025.
- What to Expect: Bells will sound at each railroad crossing when the train passes. No train horns are expected. However, the engineer may blow the horns, on an as needed basis, if deemed necessary for the safety of motorists and pedestrians. No flaggers will be present at the crossings.
