October is National Pedestrian Safety Month. The Redlands Police Department would like to remind drivers to slow down and be alert for people walking on our roads. By always taking extra precautions, you can help protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of crashes and injuries. Walking should always be an easy and safe option for getting around any community.

Movies in the Park: Kung Fu Panda 4 rescheduled

The City of Redlands Recreation Division has rescheduled the Movies in the Park showing of “Kung Fu Panda 4,” for Friday, Oct. 11, at Martinez Park. Admission is free. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy a relaxing evening. In addition to the movie, guests can enjoy pre-movie activities, food vendors and themed entertainment.

Location: Martinez Park (East San Bernardino Avenue and Church Street)

Time: Pre-movie activities begin at 5:30 p.m.; the movie starts at dusk

City earns financial reporting award for 21st consecutive year

The City of Redlands was recently awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the year ended June 2024. This is the 21st consecutive year the City has been recognized with the prestigious honor.

City to begin enforcement of timed parking in downtown

The City of Redlands will begin enforcing posted public parking times in the downtown area beginning Monday, March 18.

Timed parking enforcement will occur Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., but not on weekends or holidays. An initial grace period of two weeks will be permitted, with full enforcement beginning in April. At that time, violators of the posted public parking times will receive a warning for a first parking offense. If a second violation occurs within six months of the initial violation, vehicles will be cited.

The City of Redlands is taking applications for the second round of its Grocery Gift Card program, funded by state and local Coronavirus Recovery Funds.

The Grocery Gift Card program is designed to address the lingering economic impact on households and businesses resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Downtown’s Morning Market to Open and Relocate

On Saturday, March 2, the City of Redlands’ Downtown’s Morning Market will return in a new location and with new hours. Downtown’s Morning Market will now be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be located on Fifth Street, between Redlands Boulevard and State Street, and in Ed Hales Park and the adjacent parking lot.

City’s credit rating improves for second consecutive year

Credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s recently notified the City it has raised Redlands’ long-term and underlying rating from AA to AA+ on the City’s series 2007 pension obligation bonds. The new rating is one step below S&P’s highest rating of AAA.

“The raised rating reflects our view that the city will continue its record of strong-to-very-strong financial performance,” the company wrote in its Nov. 16 ratings summary.

Rachel Tolber named Chief of Police, effective June 12

Redlands City Manager Charles Duggan has named Rachel Tolber the new Chief of Police for the Redlands Police Department. Tolber’s appointment will become effective Monday, June 12.

Tolber was named interim chief following the March 1 announcement that Chief Chris Catren would retire due to disability as the result of a work-related back injury. Catren’s retirement will become official on June 9.

New art celebrates historic Redlands event

A 26-foot tall steel sculpture left a little town near Camp Pendleton in the fog and dark of night to arrive at the corner of Garden Street and Rossmont Drive as the sun rose Tuesday morning over Redlands.

City crews were waiting in a corner of a small park called Simond’s Parkway to install and hide the art.

“Peloton Takes the Classic Curve” was created by artist Kathleen King-Page to honor the historic and worldwide presence of the Redlands Bicycle Classic, which kicks off its 37th year April 12.

City Attorney Dan McHugh announces his retirement

After 28 years as the principal legal advisor to the City Council, the City Manager and all City operations, Dan McHugh has announced his retirement as City Attorney, effective before the end of the fiscal year.

McHugh was appointed as the City Attorney in 1994 and has served with 18 separate City Councils and seen more than 20 Council Members sworn in over that time.
